In the second half of the 5th century three brothers called Kiy, Shchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybid settled on the Dnepr hills. The eldest brother Kiy founded the town and named it in his honor. Accordingly, Shchekavitsa and Khorevitsa mountains received names of the brothers, and a small river was names in honor of their sister. To the 1,500th anniversary of the city in 1982, the monument to the founding brothers was erected on the bank of Dnipro.
