Ukraine Kyiv (Kiev) airport: Which is best to choose?

There are many airports in Ukraine, but just few of them are international. Many questions have been asked recently about what airport to choose – Kiev (Kyiv) Boryspil airport or Kiev (Kyiv) International airport (Zhuliany)? Or maybe better to fly to Lviv airport and skip Kyiv? How long it will take to get to the city center from any airport in Ukraine whether it is Kiev airport or Odessa airport etc? I’d like to tell you more about Ukraine airports where you can fly to your final destination.

List of the biggest and busiest airports in Ukraine

Each journey starts and ends with the airport, so let me introduce you to some of Ukraine’s.
There are numerous airports in Ukraine operating both international and domestic flights.

Kyiv Boryspil and Kyiv International (Zhuliany) airports.

The top flight destination for Ukraine is Kyiv, which makes sense given that it’s the capital. Most international flights to Kyiv land at Boryspil International Airport, which is located about 30 km from the center of the city. These daysmore than 30 airlines operate out of Kyiv Borispol Airport, including Ukrainian International Airlines, Lufthansa, British airways, Delta Airlines, AirFrance, Austrian, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, LOT, Turkish airlines, Etihad Airlines, Swiss International and many more.

There is another Kiev (Kyiv) airport – Kyiv International airport (IEV) (Zhuliany) which is about 10 km from the central part of the city and from over here you can fly with Wizz Air, Fly Dubai Airlines, Air Moldova, Belavia Belarusian Airlines, Georgian Airways and some other.

Domestically from Kyiv you can fly to Lviv, Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk and Ivano-Frankovsk. Most flights are about 1 hour. Terminal D in Kyiv Boryspil airport, which was opened in 2012, serves international arrivals and departures (1st and 3d floors) and domestic flights (2nd floor for departures).

This map of the terminal D help you to orientate better at the Kyiv Boryspil airport – the biggest airport in Ukraine.

What to do if you have a long layover?

If you have a long layover in Kyiv and you do not need a visa to Ukraine (you are welcome to check out whether you need a visa HERE…), you might as well do a short tour in Kyiv for a few hours. But please note, when you leave any Ukraine airport, you will need to go through the security process again, and it can take some time.

How to get from the airport to the city center?

The best and most comfortable way to get to the city center from the airports is to order a taxi. But if you travel on a budget, then from Kyiv Boryspil airport you can ride the Sky Bus that goes daily from the airport to Kharkivska metro station and the Railway station according to the schedule. More information you can see HERE…

It will take you about an hour or so to get to the Railway station if there are no traffic jams. By car/van it will be faster. From the other airports in Ukraine you will need to get a taxi or order a private transfer, since there are no shuttle busses, and connections for public transportation are not good at all.

So, generally, the best way to get to Ukraine is to fly to Kyiv Boryspil airport, which offers good connections for reasonable prices. But we will talk about it in more detail in the next articles.

Enjoy your flight and travel to Ukraine!
