Many tourists who happened to visit Eastern Ukraine noted its impressive combination of marvelous nature, rich ancient history and hospitable people that all together immediately breaks the stereotype of being a boring industrial area.

The largest metropolitan cities of Eastern Ukraine, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Zaporizhia, have busy scientific, industrial, educational and cultural life but at the same time attract with unforgettable architecture, numerous green parks, and outstanding historical memorials. One of the word largest squares in Kharkov, the longest in Europe embankment in Dnipropetrovsk, the historic-cultural complex ‘Zaporizhian Sich’ make the cities well-known far from Ukraine.

But it’s not only megapolises what makes Eastern Ukraine attractive for tourists. Smaller town also have their own unique atmosphere.

Poltava is the spiritual and historical center of Eastern Ukraine. The scene of the Poltava Battlefield is a part of UNESCO’s International Organization of Military-Historical Museums. But you won’t get a full impression of the region and its special atmosphere with bright Ukrainian folk traditions without visiting some small settlements around Poltava which were so brightly described by the famous Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol.

Every house and every tree in a small Dikanka village has its own legend. The famous Sorochinsky Fair is held every August in the same place as always – a village Velyky Soroshintsy, near Poltava. Today, it has turned into one of the biggest ethnic-culture events in Ukraine where you craftspeople and manufacturers from Ukraine represent their works. It is a great opportunity not only for buying goods and souvenirs but for watching the process of their creation and join a workshops. Since the 19th century Oposhnia has been a center for Ukrainian pottery. Its ceramic dishes, toys, and decorative tiles are known for their variety and rich decoration.

Another region famous for its traditional folk art is Petrykivka in Dnepropetrovsk area. For centuries local people has been decorating their household utensils with a style of ornamental painting that is characterized by fantastic flowers and other natural elements, based on careful observation of the local flora and fauna. Here you can not only visit a museum dedicated to the painting but watch artists during work and even take a painting lesson.

Eastern Ukrainians are proud of numerous natural wonders and treasure the generous natural resources. Many of them are popular tourist destination not only with foreigners but with Ukrainians who want to run away from busy cities and take advantage of the healing nature power. Salt caves in Soledar salt-mines, Donets area, provide a unique opportunity to play soccer on a salty field and listen to live music in the salty concert hall. Mirgorod, Ukrainian Baden-Baden in Poltava area, is popular due to the water of its healing springs. Gorgeous dendrological parks in Krasnokutsk in Kharkiv area and Trostianets nit far from Summi capture attention of those tourists who can appreciate plant collection and just love to walk along quite green alleys. And of course the picturesque banks of the Seversky Donets River provide a lot of opportunities for active tourism.

Be it winter or summer visiting Eastern Ukraine is a memory carved forever.
