Underground Submarine Base in Balaklava, Sebastopol suburbs, used to be a secret military facility during the Cold War. The large scale underground submarine maintenance and repair complex was hidden deep inside the hillside and was said to be virtually indestructible and designed to survive a direct atomic impact. In 1993 the base stopped its military operation and since then it is open to the public for guided tours around the canal system, the base, and the Naval Museum where models of warships, various elements of submarines’ armory, naval armaments and ammunition, memorabilia and unique documents are exhibited.
